7 Book Launch Mistakes First-Time Self-Published Authors Make
Most launch problems are avoidable. Here are seven common mistakes first-time authors make and how to avoid each one.
Read articleEditing and proofreading are not the same job. Learn the difference, the order they happen in and which one your manuscript needs right now.
Authors often ask whether they need an editor or a proofreader. The honest answer is usually both, but at different times. Understanding editing vs proofreading will save you money and make your book better.
Editing improves the content of your book. It happens early, while the manuscript can still change. There are three common levels:
Proofreading is the final quality check. It happens after editing and after your book has been laid out. The proofreader looks for small mistakes that slipped through: typos, doubled words, inconsistent spacing, broken headings and layout errors.
The sequence matters. First comes developmental editing, then line editing, then copyediting. After that your book is formatted, and only then does a proofreader check the final file. Proofreading a manuscript that will still be rewritten is a waste of money.
If you are still unsure whether the story or argument works, start with developmental editing. If the content is solid but the prose feels clumsy, choose line editing. If you have already edited and formatted the book, you need proofreading.
Self-editing is a valuable first step, but you cannot be your own final reader. After many rereads, your brain fills in what you meant to write. Fresh professional eyes are the best investment you can make in your book.
